IPL 2022 – Mega Auction Date & Time-Lucknow & Ahmedabad Franchises -CVC to sign fresh contract next week

IPL-2022:

The Indian Premier League (IPL)-2022 is a fifteenth season of IPL. It is a professional T20 Cricket league established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007. The fifteenth edition will see the expansion of the league, with the addition of two new franchises. In August 2021, the BCCI confirmed that two new franchises would join the IPL-2022 league. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is the defending champions of last season.

Mega Auction of IPL-2022:

The mega auction for the IPL-2022 is to be held on February 12 and 13, 2022. The venue of the auction is Bengaluru. It will be a two-day event like the 2018 mega auction.

IPL-2022 Team and retention Details:

In IPL-2022, a total of 10 franchises i.e. Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad will take part in the auctions. Before retention, each team has a purse of Rs. 90 crore for the auction. Of that, eight teams were allowed to spend up to Rs.42 crore on retaining players.

So far, all the old 8 franchises have retained a total of 27 players in their squads. Out of these, there are 19 domestic players and 8 overseas players. There are also 4 uncapped players in the retention lists. All the old teams were allowed to retain a maximum of 4 players in their squads. Out of these, there can be 3 maximum domestic players and 2 maximum overseas players. The new teams Lucknow and Ahmedabad will be allowed to pick 3 players each directly from the pool of released players.

New franchises to sign players by January 31st:

Before IPL-2022 auction, two new teams of the league, Lucknow and Ahmedabad have to add three players each from their franchises. BCCI has now set a fixed a time limit for this. Both the new franchises will have to submit the list of their final players to the BCCI by January 31st-2022. At the same time, CVC Capital will sign a new contract next week.

The BCCI had earlier given time till December 25th-2021 to the two new franchises to select their three players each. However, the deadline was extended due to the Ahmedabad franchise owned by CVC Capital. The BCCI has not officially announces the date. However, the report said that the IPL Governing Council has approved January 31st as the deadline.

Ahmedabad IPL Franchise:

Ahmedabad Franchise is owned by CVC Capitals. CVC stands for Corporate Venture Capital. It is British private equity and investment advisory firm with approximately US$111 billion in secured commitments since inception across European and Asian private equity, credit and growth funds. It also has an investment in sports like formula 1 racing, football, cricket, rugby and more. The group offered a bidding amount of Rs. 5,625 crore to win the ownership of the team. According to reports, the team might use the title of Ahmedabad Renegades for the tournament.

The deadline has fixed tentatively and became possible after an independent BCCI committee approved CVC Capital. The firm had acquired the bidding rights for the Ahmedabad franchise in October, but was investigated by the BCCI for alleged links with betting companies. After BCCI’s independent committee gave the firm green signal, Ahmedabad will sign a new contract with the Indian board next week.

A top BCCI official told, “Some additional clauses are being added to the contract. Legal teams of both sides have agreed on the new drafts. We should complete the signing process next week”.

  • After getting green signal from the BCCI independent committee, CVC Capital will sign a fresh contract with BCCI for the Ahmedabad franchise.
  • CVC Capital executives are in Mumbai to sign the contract. BCCI is currently drafting a fresh one adding some new clauses.
  • The BCCI will formally announce the deadline of January 31st to sign three players once the signings are done.
  • Ahmedabad team is also set to make some key announcements in the next 5-10 days.
  • Once they receive the ‘Letter of Intent’ formally, the franchise will issue the commercial packages including title sponsor, chest sponsor and other sponsorships.

Lucknow IPL Franchise:

The Lucknow franchise is owned by the RPSG Group of Sanjiv Goenka. The group bought the rights of the team at an amount of Rs.7090 crore.

Vijay Dahiya has been appointed as the assistant coach. The franchise approached Gary Kirsten to be the consultant of the team for the 2022 season. The franchise is also looking to pick KL Rahul as the skipper for the team.
