Harleen Deol – Career Information

Harleen Deol is an Indian Woman cricketer who played for India from 2019 to the present. She is an all-rounder, a right-handed batswoman who occasionally bowls right-arm leg-spinner. She was interested in cricket from a young age. She started playing cricket with her brother and neighbourhood. She was trained under popular coach ‘Praveen Sinha’.

Early life cricketing career

Harleen Deol started playing cricket at 8 with her brother and neighbourhood. Her brother’s name is Manjot Singh Deol who is a doctor. Her neighbours then start complaining to her parents regarding Harleen playing with boys. But, her mother was supportive and considered it a privilege that her daughter was playing a sport. Later, she began playing cricket on the school team.

At the age of 12, she got selected for the district match. There she had her first match against Mohali, where she met RP Singh, the coach of their team, who later selected her to the state team. She was an off-spinner, but her coach advised her to try more leg-spin instead of off-spin. That is how she becomes a googly. She started her domestic career at just 12 for the Punjab team.

Domestic Career

In 2010, she made her domestic cricket debut for Punjab. Later that year, her father transferred to Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. She was impressed by the facilities young girls were getting there, so even she asked her father to shift her base. So, she moved to Himachal Pradesh for better opportunities. At 13, she started playing cricket for Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA). In 2013, she made her T20 debut for Himachal Pradesh. In 2014, she was listed in the List-A profile for the HPCA.

In 2015, she represented North Zone in the Under-19 cricket. Her career turning point was in the year 2015 Inter-zonal U-19 tournament, where she scored first century 116 runs against the East Zone. It was a high point in her career. In 2017, she was the highest run-scorer in the Inter-zonal tournament.

Apart from cricket, she is also good at football, hockey, and basketball. She is the second women’s cricketer from Chandigarh to play for India after ‘Taniya Bhatia’. Also, she is the second women’s cricketer from HPCA to play for India after ‘Sushma Verma’.

International career

In 2019, Harleen Deol got selected for the Indian Women’s team squad for the Women’s One Day International cricket (WODI). On February 22nd-2019, she made her debut for the Indian Women’s team in Women’s ODI international cricket against England Women at Wankhede in Mumbai, under the captainship of Mithali Raj. 

In March 04th-2019, she made her debut for the Indian Women’s team in Women’s T20 international cricket against England Women at Guwahati. She scored eight runs off ten balls in the match. In May 06th-2019, she made her debut for the Trailblazers at the Women’s IPL T20 challenge against Supernovas, where she scored 36 runs off 44 balls. And also, she contributed 100 runs in partnership with Smriti Mandhana.

In January 2020, she was named to India Women’s squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup-2020 in Australia, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur. However, she didn’t get a chance to play any match in the tournament.

During the WT20I series on June 10th-2021, she became famous after a stunning catch against the England Women team by jumping across the boundary rope and diving forward to dismiss Amy Jones, who played very well in the first T20I. It was one of the best catches ever in Women’s cricket. She praised Sachin Tendulkar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the catch.

She scored 135 runs from 13 WT20I matches at a batting average of 16.9 and a strike rate of 83.8. She took six wickets from 13 WT20I matches and conceded 140 runs at an economy rate of 7.77. She has played only one WODI match and scored two runs at an average of 2.0. She is waiting for her debut Test match. She has just begun her international career.
