ICC Under-19 World Cup-2022:

The ICC Under-19 World Cup-2022 is a fourteenth edition of Under-19 Cricket World Cup tournament. It is an international limited-overs (50 overs) or ODI cricket tournament. The West Indies will be hosting the tournament, which begins on January 14th-2022 and ends on February 05th-2022. India is the current champions of ICC Under-19 World Cup-2022.

ICC U-19 World Cup-2022 – Teams:

A total of 16 teams were split into four groups. Each group has 4 teams.

Group A – England U-19, Bangladesh U-19, United Arab Emirates U-19 and Canada U-19
Group B – India U-19, South Africa U-19, Ireland U-19 and Uganda U-19
Group C – Pakistan U-19, Afghanistan U-19, Zimbabwe U-19 and Papua New Guinea U-19
Group D – Sri Lanka U-19, Australia U-19, West Indies U-19 and Scotland U-19

India Team Position in ICC U-19 World Cup-2022:

India Under-19 team belongs to Group-B. It holds the first position in the league standings of Group-B, with 6 points in their account. They played total of 3 group-stage matches, in which they have won all the 3 matches.

  • India Under-19 team played their first Group Stage match against South Africa U-19 on January 15th, in which India U-19 has won the match by 45 runs.
  • They played their second match in Group-B against Ireland U-19 on January 19th, in which IND U-19 team has won the match by 174 runs.
  • They played their third match in Group-B against Uganda U-19 on January 22nd, in which IND U-19 team has won the match by 326 runs.

VVS Laxman praises Yash Dhull & Co’s:

On February 05th (Saturday), team India clinched a record-extending fifth U-19 World Cup title after they defeat England by 4 wickets. England has scored 189 runs in 44.5 overs, with no wickets left to spare. India has goal of 190 runs to win. They scored 195 runs in 47.4 overs, with 4 wickets left to spare. The campaign was a huge success especially considering how the team dealt with the COVID-19 outbreak during the group stages.

Nishant Sindhu and Shaik Rasheed scored half-centuries in final match and Raj Bawa picked up a 5 wickets to help bowl out England team for 189.

VVS Laxman, who is the chief of National Cricket Academy (NCA) head and in-charge of the development of U-19. On February 06th-2022 (Sunday), He hailed the “resilience and positive attitude” shown by India’s Under-19 World Cup winners while lauding the BCCI for running a world-class youth structure and organizing innumerable, competitive age-group tournaments. He also congratulated the selectors and the coaching staff.

He said, “Firstly, huge congratulations to the selection committee, because it was a new selection committee and it was quite challenging for them to identify this group and after that I think it’s the coaching staff with Hrishikesh as the head coach, Sairaj Munish Bali and all the support staff. The way they brought this group together, they worked really hard and won the Asia Cup and the preparation to this World Cup was fantastic.”

He added, “I think BCCI has to be complemented, the number of tournaments each age group players get to play, whether U-16, U-19 or U-23… unfortunately over the last two years because of Covid-19 they didn’t play any tournament and that’s why this win is very special. It is just a learning process and everyone understands that in the group, Exciting times for all of them.”

He also added, “In the middle of the tournament we all know what happened to the boys, to test positive but to show that kind of resilience and positive attitude is exemplary.”

Yash Dhull – a Captain for India Under-19 team:

India’s campaign in the ICC U-19 World Cup-2022 of the tournament was nearly derailed after six players, including skipper Yash Dhull and his deputy Shaik Rasheed, tested positive for the Covid-19 virus during the group stages.

After their tournament opener against South Africa, India had only 11 players available for their remaining two games, with Captain Yash Dhull and Vice-captain Shaik Rasheed also ruled out. Nishant Sindhu stood in as captain while the support staff helped around with drinks on the field as the team waited for replacement players. Dhull and Co. returned in time for the quarter-final against Bangladesh and they were available until the final match of ICC U-19 World Cup-2022.

Yash Dhull said at the post-match presentation, “It’s a proud moment to achieve something for India. At first it was difficult to find our combinations in the tournament but then we became like a family. Sir [head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar] made it a good environment and team strength was good. It was a great moment to be playing under this lot of support staff “.

Head Coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar praised Yash Dhull:

Hrishikesh Kanitkar- a head coach praised Dhull for leading the side to the title.

He said, “It’s too exciting for my good, but happy with the result. I think we learned a lot from this. We were looking to bat as well. There was a little bit of moisture.”

He also added, “Dhull led them very well. He has a very good head on his shoulders. I think it’s a fabulous competition, getting this stage to perform at this young age, for all teams. It’s a great opportunity to showcase talent and for the academies around the world”.

India U-19 World Cup victory list:

India is the most successful team in U-19 World Cups, with five titles to their name. It was India’s eighth final with four on the trot. The Men in Blue have won three over the last ten years, with Yash Dhull and Co. the latest to climb to the top of the summit. They had previously won the title in 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2018.
