Early life cricketing career

Arundhati Reddy started playing cricket at 12 with her brother and his friends for free time. Her brother’s name is Rohit Reddy. After watching Indian win the title at the T20 Championship-2007 against South Africa, she decided to pursue cricket. However, she did start playing cricket, and it was just recreation. But very soon, she became a serious affair with the sport.

Her mother, Bhagya Reddy, realized that her daughter might have a future in cricket. As a child, Arundhati received immense support from her family to play cricket. Her mother was an outstanding volleyball player. However, financial constraints prevented her mother from being a professional volleyball player. So, her mother, Bhagya Reddy, encouraged Arundhati to take the sport seriously. As a result, she reached to play in the Indian’s women cricket team.

Every day, Arundhati Reddy had to wake up at 4 AM for net sessions. Then, her mother would drop her at school. She was one of the best students in her school. Back from school, she would go for the evening time net practice. She would return house only at 9 PM and will have barely any time for dinner. But this invariably affects her studies.

Once a contender to top the exams, she soon fell through the ranks in school. However, instead of keeping her daughter away from cricket, her mother encouraged her to do better cricket. She never has to face the pressure of getting good grades.

Domestic Career

Arundhati Reddy’s mother spoke to Arundhati’s cousin, who used to play professionally. Arundhati Reddy joined the same academy and started training. Despite bowling well, she also wanted to wicket-keeping, as she was inspired by Rahul Dravid, a former Indian player and a part-time Indian wicket-keeper. Initially, Arundhati started as a wicket-keeper batsman. She soon found herself on the Hyderabad team, where she met former Indian cricketer and the head coach of the Women’s team Savita Nirala.

At Hyderabad Cricket Association, Arundhati started to get more engrossed in bowling than batting. She was quick and agile due to her lean build and low centre of gravity. Savita Nirala quickly understood how Arundhati’s build is suited for fast bowling. So, she groomed Arundhati into an all-rounder with an inclination toward the right-arm fast bowler. She worked closely with Arundhati and helped her grow as a cricketer.

Then, Arundhati got acquainted with Railways’ cricket coach Nooshin Al Khadeer, who also profoundly impacted her career. She considers Nooshin Al Khadeer and Savita Nirala to be instrumental in shaping her career.

During her Under-19 days, everyone told her she was very talented and could play for the country someday because she was a fast bowler. So after that, her interest in bowling keeps increasing.
