Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina’s CSK teammate took to Twitter to congratulate the couple. In his tweet, Harbhajan stated, “Congratulations @ImRaina and Priyanka for the baby boy”.
Suresh Raina last played for India in July 2018. The World Cup 2011 winner has not played competitive cricket since IPL 2019. The all-rounder underwent knee surgery in August last year and was undergoing recovery. The left-handed batsman is the second highest run-getter in the IPL behind India captain Virat Kohli with 5,368 runs in his kitty from 193 matches.
CSK was scheduled to face Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29 in the opening match of the IPL. However, the rising concern over the spread of the coronavirus pandemic has led to the season being postponed to April 15. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly said that a decision on whether the matches will be held in empty stadiums or the new schedule can be decided after the situation is assessed after April 15.
Suresh Raina has been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings team and has been consistent at the number 3 spot. The left-handed batsman has featured in 193 games in the IPL and has scored 5368 runs with an average of 33.34. He is the second-highest run-getter in the Indian Premier League with only Virat Kohli being ahead of him. Kohli has scored 5412 runs in 177 games with an average of 37.84 and a strike rate of 131.61.
Thank you all for your kind wishes. All your love & blessing means a lot us. Baby is home, safe & sound. We all are going through unimaginable times currently. Stay home, stay safe everyone.— Suresh Raina🇮🇳 (@ImRaina) March 24, 2020
However, Raina has been out of the national squad for quite some time. The last game that the left-handed batsman played for India was back in 2018 against England at Headingly. Raina’s last T20I was also against England on July 08, 2018. In T20Is, Suresh Raina has scored 1604 runs in 78 games for India. He averages 29.16 with a strike rate of 134.79 in the shortest format of the game.
Suresh Raina trained with his Chennai Super Kings teammates MS Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu, and Piyush Chawla among others in Chennai during the 1st week of March before the training camp was called off due to Covid-19 pandemic. CSK was gearing up for IPL 2020 but the cash-rich T20 league has now been suspended until April 15 due to novel coronavirus.
On Sunday, Suresh Raina took to social media to pay his tribute to India’s essential service providers who have been working tirelessly despite the lockdown imposed in several states even as the Covid-19 cases are rising in the country.
The Covid-19 pandemic has jolted the global sporting calendar with several high-profile events being canceled or postponed. The Board of Control for Cricket in India apart from suspending IPL has also suspended all domestic cricket until the mid of April. Raina, a 2011 World Cup winner, recently warned against spreading misinformation related to coronavirus and to follow health advisories.
“It’s very important that we understand the need for social isolation to break the chain, don’t spread information from unreliable sources, don’t ignore the health advisories & for sure follow the hygiene measures. #coronavirus” he tweeted.
