South Africa’s limited-overs skipper, Temba Bavuma has witnessed a sudden rise in his international career in terms of responsibilities. When Faf du Plessis announced his resignation as the captain of South Africa in early 2021, Quinton de Kock was appointed as captain in all three formats.
And, while Quinton de Kock didn’t lead the Test team for long eventually he lost the place in the limited-overs cricket as well. It was in March 2021, Temba Bavuma became the Proteas skipper when Bavuma was suddenly named the captain of the Proteas’ 50-over and T20Is. He helped the South African team to win 4 out of 5 matches in the T20 World Cup later that year.
Talking about his captaincy, as per the quotes in Betway, Temba Bavuma said, “It was not something I expected. There was concern and fear about how he would take the team to new heights. With white-ball teams, the players are still young, all that needs to be said.”
Bavuma’s appointment has been inked in the history book as he become the first black captain of the South African cricket team. However, the reason for his appointment was his experience in tuning with the players in the team.
He further elaborated, “We’re fortunate that we have several legends of the past who I can call upon, too. JP Duminy was in the T20 management camp and he added to the brains of the team. He has a great brain and I bounced ideas off him.
